Penicillin-induced autoimmune hemolytic anemia, an example of type II hypersensitivity. In this type of reaction, penicillin is believed to act as a hapten. On its own, a hapten molecule cannot elicit an immune response because it cannot activate helper T cells. However, when a hapten molecule binds to a protein, the hapten-protein conjugate is capable of eliciting an immune response.
