DIC is characterized by widespread clotting/microthrombi formation which leads to a deficiency of clotting factors (increased PT/aPTT) and consumption of platelets (decreased platelet count, increased bleeding time). This condition can occur as a sequela of trauma, sepsis, or obstetric complication.
