Monobactams, such as aztreonam, are β-lactam antibiotics, which work by interfering with the cross-linking of bacterial cell walls and have adverse side effects that include diarrhea, nausea, diffuse skin rash, candidiasis, and (rarely) angioedema and pseudomembranous colitis.
