Renal microaneurysms are characteristic of polyarteritis nodosa, which is a systemic vasculitis involving medium and small muscular arteries. Necrotizing inflammatory inflammation of the vessels leads to microaneurysm formation and rupture, and therefore to hemorrhages, thrombosis and ischemia of organs such as the kidneys.
