Diverticulitis – Inflammation of colonic diverticula (herniated outpouchings of the colonic mucosa & submucosa through the muscularis mucosae). PT’s have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, low grade fever & leukocytosis is common. PE may show a tender mass in the left lower quadrant due to abscess formation or inflammation. Common in elderly. Absence of muscularis propria.
