Extensive vascular calcifications occur in small bowel obstruction -> due to metabolic insults such as electrolyte abnormalities, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, and uremia can cause smooth muscle cells in the arterial media to differentiate into osteoblast-like cells (osteogenic differentiation) -> active deposition of Ca salts within vessels.
