Cholesteatomas are a collection of squamous cell debris that form a round pearly mass behind the tympanic membrane in the middle ear. Painless otorrhea but can secrete lytic enzymes that erode ossicles -> conductive hearing loss. Vertigo/facial paralysis rare but can happen if large enough.
