Gap junctions serve as communicating junctions. They contain hundreds of tiny pores that permit the quick transport of small molecules. As such, they facilitate electrical excitation of cell membranes, particularly in electrically active cells such as cardiac myocytes, where they are abundant in the intercalated discs.
