High levels of insulin are seen in insulinomas, which are benign tumors of the β cells of pancreatic islets. Insulinomas produce large quantities of insulin in the blood and are characterized clinically by the Whipple triad: symptoms of hypoglycemia (eg, tremor, diaphoresis, and confusion), documented low plasma glucose when symptoms are present, and reversal of symptoms upon glucose administration.
