Inactivation of the 60S ribosome by removal of adenine from rRNA is characteristic of Shigella species and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). Shigella dysenteriae causes dysentery and can also cause hemolytic uremic syndrome; this is not common but possible. EHEC can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome.
