Cardiac muscle is unique in that it has intercalated discs, regions of contact between adjacent cardiac muscle cells containing aggregations of gap junctions. Such intercellular junctions are specialized for the rapid spread of contractile stimuli between cells, thereby allowing virtually simultaneous contraction of the muscle fibers.
