Transformation – process by which bacterium can take exogenous DNA fragments (from dead bacteria), integrate the DNA to its genome, and express encoded proteins, and a way nonvirulent strains can gain virulence from dead virulent strains. E.g. Streptococcus (S. Pneumoniae), Hemophilus, Bacillus, Neisseria species
