Patient with progressively worsening headaches on the right side of her head, and head pain the increases when she gets out of bed in the morning. An MRI reveals a tumor attached to the dura mater, and excisional biopsy shows that the tumor arises from the arachnoid. The MRI and clinical symptoms of headache and focal neurologic defects are consistent with a tumor that forms on the meninges, called a meningioma. A tumor common in middle-aged women, and is the most common tumor affecting the central nervous system. Psammoma bodies representing round microscopic calcific collections, are a feature of the psammomatous variant of meningioma.
