Propranolol, a nonselective β-blocker, can be used in the management of hypertension, since it blocks the action of epinephrine and norepinephrine at both β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors. However, initiating a β-blocker prematurely before adequate α-blockade would cause unopposed α-adrenergic receptor stimulation, precipitating a hypertensive crisis.
